Our Archbishops

Our Leadership Structure

The African Divine Church has been led by three archbishops since its founding in 1949. Each leader has contributed uniquely to the growth and development of the church, building upon the foundation laid by their predecessors while addressing the challenges of their time.

African Divine Church operates under a well-defined leadership structure that ensures effective governance and spiritual guidance. At the helm is the Archbishop, supported by key office bearers including the General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, General Treasurer, and Assistant General Treasurer. Together, they provide strategic direction for the church.

The hereditary leadership transition from father to son has provided stability and continuity in the church's governance. This tradition has helped maintain the vision and values established by the founder while allowing for adaptation to changing circumstances.

The church is organized into various departments led by 21 Directors and 25 Assistant Directors. These include areas such as Education, Theology, Peace and Reconciliation, Lands and Development, Youth Ministry, and Resource Mobilization. This structure ensures comprehensive coverage of all aspects of church ministry and community service.

The archbishops of ADC have not only provided spiritual leadership but have also overseen the expansion of the church's educational, health, and community development initiatives. Their holistic approach to ministry has enabled ADC to make a significant impact in the communities it serves.

At the grassroots level, the church is served by 687 Chief Vicars, 3,612 Pastors, and 277 Evangelists. Complementing this spiritual leadership are 687 Mama Regions and 3,612 Mama Assemblies who provide vital support to women's ministries. This extensive network ensures the church's presence and impact across all communities we serve.

Archbishop Saul Chabuga (1898-1970)

Archbishop Saul Chabuga, the founder of ADC, led the church from 1949 until his death in 1970. His vision for an indigenous African church free from external control was realized through his persistence and faith in God's guidance.

During his leadership, Saul established the constitutional framework of the church and secured the headquarters at Boyani. He navigated the challenges of registration with colonial authorities and oversaw the initial expansion of the church to neighboring regions.

Saul's legacy is evident in the strong biblical foundation of ADC and its commitment to spiritual growth and community development. His leadership style emphasized prayer, unity, and faithfulness to God's word, principles that continue to guide the church today.

Archbishop James Lilege Chabuga (1970-2005)

Archbishop James Lilege Chabuga, son of the founder, led ADC from 1970 to 2005. Born on February 15, 1928, James was dedicated to God's service as an infant and was prepared for leadership from a young age through both formal education and spiritual mentorship.

Under James' leadership, ADC expanded its mission beyond spiritual development to include education, health, and community development initiatives. He established Boyani Health Centre, Boyani nursery school, and several primary schools, demonstrating his commitment to holistic ministry.

James also oversaw the expansion of ADC to Uganda and Tanzania, internationalizing the church's mission. His educational background and professional experience before becoming archbishop equipped him with skills that proved valuable in managing the growing organization.

Archbishop John Saiya Lilege (2005-Present)

Archbishop John Saiya Lilege, the current leader of ADC, has continued the legacy of his predecessors while modernizing the church's operations. Born in 1968 to Archbishop James Chabuga and Jelida Kanaiza, John was well-educated and professionally experienced before assuming leadership.

Since taking office in 2005, John has implemented a strategic plan to guide the church's development. He has expanded health services at Boyani Dispensary, opened new clinics, and enhanced health education programs, demonstrating his commitment to community well-being.

John's leadership has been characterized by strategic planning, institutional development, and technological adaptation. His vision for ADC combines the preservation of the church's rich heritage with innovation to meet contemporary challenges and opportunities.

The legacy of our archbishops is not in buildings they built, but in lives they transformed through their faithful service to God and humanity.
